Lab grown diamonds are diamonds that are created in a lab with the same chemical structure as their mined counterparts. Diamonds produced in this way have identical physical and optical properties, making them perfect substitutes for mined diamonds. As of 2018, there are only two companies in the world that produce labgrown diamonds on an industrial scale — Diamond Foundry and Apollo Diamond — and both have their unique processes and benefits/features.
Lab Grown Diamonds: An Introduction
You’ve probably heard a lot about lab grown diamonds. The last several years have seen some major developments in lab grown diamonds, and they’re likely to gaining traction as a new category of diamond product. But there is still a lot of confusion over what exactly lab grown diamonds are, how they compare to mined diamonds, and whether you buying them instead of mined diamonds. I conducted an informal survey recently which revealed that only around 20% of people in North America even knew that manmade or synthetic diamonds existed! In today’s post we will cover: 1) What are Synthetic Diamonds? 2) How Are Lab Grown Diamonds Made?
What Is Moissanite?
Moissanite is a type of natural mineral found in certain types of meteorites. For example, it found in an ancient crater located in Arizona called Meteor Crater. In 1902, a French scientist by the name of Henri Moissan discovered Moissanite while examining residue from melted rock in that very crater. Today, labs use sophisticated technology to create Moissanite using CVD (chemical vapor deposition) or HPHT (high-pressure/high-temperature) techniques. However, unlike CVD diamonds manufacturer, Moissanite is not as durable and not withstand intense heat or harsh chemicals like steam; it also does not possess any natural fire or brilliance. It’s considered to a semi-precious stone and costs about half as much as a Lab Grown Diamond. It is used for everything from jewelry to industrial purposes. Because of its properties, Moissanite tends to look better when paired with gold than with silver or platinum. Because it has no naturally occurring imperfections, you buy larger sizes without worrying about cracks developing over time. You never wear your ring while performing a physical activity—Moissanite will break if subjected to extreme pressure!
Lab Grown And Moissanite Vs. Actual Diamonds
Diamonds do last forever, but what if you don’t have that kind of money lying around to buy one? That’s where lab grown diamonds and Moissanite come in. A variety of companies are now offering customers a less expensive option by creating crystals out of carbon (in a process called chemical vapour deposition). In addition to more affordable, some people say these diamonds actually look better than their mined counterparts—but there’s still some controversy on that topic.
